How bad is it to simply default? What happens, what are the downsides?
Is it possible to sell a timeshare to someone via a quitclaim, and just record that claim in the county, and walk away?
Any advice?
I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that you will ruin your credit rating for quite awhile. If you quit paying, the timeshare resort will send it to a collection agency and report it to the credit bureaus. This means a hit to your credit score which will hound you for a minimum of a few years.

You can try the quitclaim (http://www.timesharetrap.com/give_back_your_timeshare.html), but there is no guarantee the timeshare resort will accept it and if they don't, you run into the same problem with having your credit ruined.

Can i sell it to someone else, for a dollar, and record that sale with a quit claim? Is that legal? Will the new person then be the owner of record?
In other words, how do i manage to even give it away? Charities won't take it, can i sell it to someone and file with a quit claim, or must the sale be more complex?

If anyone is really interested in donating their timeshare to charity, I recommend checking out http://www.communityhousingdevelopment.org/. I donated my "right to use" timeshare and it finally sold! I can now use it for a tax break. They worked hard at it, but your maintenance fees have to be paid up and your paperwork in order....good luck!
