In addition to timeshare yearly maintenance fees (http://www.timesharetrap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147), a timeshare resort may also impose special assessment fees on top of the yearly maintenance fee. Special assessment fees are used to cover large, unexpected expenses that the regular maintenance fees can't cover. A special assessment fee might be introduced if there is a natural disaster of some type that damages the timeshare resort. When special assessment fees are levied on timeshare owners, it usually has to be approved by the board of directors of the timeshare homeowners' association.
