I have had little luck trying to sell my timeshare and I can't use it due to the travel cost of getting there. My question is whether it's easier to rent the timeshare week out than it would be to sell it? Would I be able to recover the fees that I have paid if I do this?

It's becoming more difficult to rent with the hard economic times, but it's probably easier to rent your timeshare out than it would be to sell it in this current environment.
The big problem is that more and more developers have decided to rent out their unused timeshare inventory and are doing so for less than owners’ annual maintenance fees. As you might imagine, this has upset a lot of timeshare owners because the timeshare resort is competing against the timeshare owners for renters. By discounting the rental rates, it's impossible for the timeshare owners to rent out their timeshare units and get back the maintenance fees that they paid.

It all depends on the price you are willing to rent it out for. Most people who try to rent want to recover at least the maintenance fees that they paid for that year to break even. If you are not willing to go for less than this cost, it will be much more difficult. The further you willing to discount the price, the easier it will be to rent. It's not a long term solution because most years you won't be able to recover your maintenance fee costs.

Timeshares are not easy to rent, and usually you can not rent it for mor than what the maintenance fee is.
If you were told by your sales rep that you can make money out of renting it out, you were probably scammed.
