View Full Version : Sleazy presentations

revolted

My wife dragged me to a Wyndham presentation, tonight, to get freebies. I was almost physically revolted by the dishonest pitch, and got to squirming and making stage whispers (I did not intend them to be that loud) to my wife during the group presentation. They almost threw us out (in retrospect I would not have minded), but the individual sales guy (oops, "Vacation Counselor") apparently thought it better to take us to a side room to avoid a bigger scene.

He tried to pitch for a while, while I did my whole economist thing on why I thought it didn't make sense (I wish I had 10 bucks for each time I said "thats not apples to apples"). Finally he gave up and just talked politics (I thought his politics were sleazy too, but I won't go into that here.) Finally the two hours of hell were up, my wife got her freebies and we left.

My wife thinks I was out of control and overreacted. I have not been able to get her to grok why this kind of thing makes me distraught. We could just say no (which we did) - its that they take other people in - worse, even, its just the offense against truth. We still haven't reached a meeting of the minds on my conduct. In my defense, I didn't know it would be that bad, my wife said we would just have to watch a film. I should have just left, I suppose, but I didn't want to disappoint my wifes desire for freebies, and the worst moment happened very fast.

I am glad that at least we didn't buy a timeshare from them, but there really wasn't any chance of that happening anyway.

Thanks for the opportunity to vent.

I wouldn't buy anything from them even if I saw a time share (pardon, 'vacation ownership') that legitimately was a good deal. Hell, I am considering boycotting Wyndam Hotels, or at least writing to them and suggesting that they drop the time share affiliate (fat chance of that happening, eh?)

Unfortunately, this is all too common. I would suggest that if you ever go to a timeshare sales presentation, take a tape recorder and place it right smack on the table and say that you will record the entire session. If you ever want to leave, the simplest thing to say is that you would like the contract so your lawyer can review it. If they decline for any reason (which they will), simply ask why don't they want a lawyer to see it and review it - it puts you on the offensive instead of the other way around.
